How can you choose the best doctor?

On a podcast episode of Freakonomics, M.D., about how to choose a doctor, David Asch shared data on how obstetrician training relates to pregnancy outcomes. The research he cited, published in JAMA in 2009, found an association between residency programs and maternal complication rates. Asch also discussed doctor age: "A lot of people think that, eventually, doctors get worse as they get older. But, we found that in obstetrics, they just get better and better and never stop getting better."

Way to Health 2021 roundup: The year in numbers

2021 was a year full of accomplishments for Way to Health, CHCI's web-based platform that automates, facilitates, and evaluates the systematic testing of behavioral interventions to promote health. Check out the highlights with the Way to Health Year in Review: 2021 in Numbers.

Opioid disorder screening paper selected as NEJM Catalyst Editors' Pick

The article "Redesign of Opioid Use Disorder Screening and Treatment in the ED," co-authored by CHCI's Rinad BeidasKit Delgado, and Dina Abdel-Rahman, was highlighted in the NEJM Catalyst Editors' Picks e-newsletter. Published in January 2022, the paper details how the team designed a clinician-informed protocol to improve the assessment and care of patients with opioid use disorder in the emergency department.

Nudge Unit leadership announced that the next Nudges in Health Care Symposium will be held virtually on October 14, 2022. Individuals interested in attending should subscribe to receive updates about registration and other important milestones by completing this form and share suggestions for speakers and topics here.

Do you have an idea to improve health care delivery and patient outcomes at Penn Medicine using nudges? Members of the University of Pennsylvania and Penn Medicine community are invited to submit proposals by March 11, 2022. Selected projects will receive guidance from the Nudge Unit team on design, testing, and implementation in the health system and support with data extraction.

Penn Medicine health care workers are invited to participate in the Center for Digital Health's COBALT+ randomized control trial. This paid study will evaluate how effectively Penn Medicine's COBALT platform supports mental health among health care workers.
